General Wardrobe Tips

  • Don't match, coordinate.
  • The best idea is to choose two colors and to wear different hues of them.
  • Choose neutral clothing.
  • Work out outfits around that - blues or greens always work well
  • It's also fun to add a pop of color to the mix to complement the mood.
  • Florals also work well :)
  • Thus any shades of blues and/or pinks, or shades of blues/yellows/greys. This way the colors are still coordinated, but it's not so "matchy".
  • Since our work is more about feeling and less about style, we advise to keep it simple and clean. Subdued colors, solids and muted prints work well for that.
  • For those at-home sessions... Babies and toddlers look adorable in Babygro's and in diapers.
  • Choose colors from your home - Dress to coordinate with your home (light, bright and airy OR moody and dark)
  • Shop at the same store for all the outfits. This will be especially helpful when there are multiple people to dress.
  • For the kids - some sort of geometric pattern can lighten up the photos even more (stripes, polka dots... just be sure not to overdo or overthink this)
  • I'm all about who you truly are - Wearing your favorite outfit from your closet, rather than purchasing new clothing. Everyone has a go-to outfit that they choose that fits perfectly and makes you feel fabulous.
  • Always keep your session location in mind when choosing your outfit.

For AUTUMN / WINTER:

When considering an outdoor photo session in the winter months, you may be in a bit of a predicament.

Of course, you want to look cute for your session, but you do not want to be too cold while standing outside for an hour or two!

  • Visible Layers - coats, sweaters etc. - can not only keep you warm and cozy, but add lots of great visual interest to a photo! Consider finding an adorable coat or jersey that you could wear for your entire session, and plan any other outfits around that!
  • Hidden Layers - As great as visible layers are, you might want to consider some “hidden” layers (multiple pairs of pants/socks/shirts etc.). Layering extra warmth under your “visible” layers (as long as they don’t get too bulky!) can be a game changer during a winter session. You’ll want to make sure you can last in the cooler temperatures.
  • Winter Accessories - Give me ALL of the adorable winter accessories! Hats, scarves, mittens, boots, boot socks, wraps - you name it, it can be incorporated into your images, AND add warm during your session!
  • Bright Pops of Color - I LOVE bright colors for winter sessions! During winter, pops of color (think a bright colored coat, or a bright set of mittens, scarf, and hat!) can add lots of visual interest and “pop” to your images!
  • Winter Themed Props - Fun winter themed props can be a great way to stay warm during your session! Have a cute and cozy blanket laying around the house? Bring it and we can have you sit on it, or wrap you and your family or partner up in it! You could even bring some cute mugs and hot chocolate/coffee/tea for something a bit more styled.
  • AVOID dull neutrals.
  • Avoid TOO Many Heavy Layers - Too many extra layers can add on extra “weight” that isn’t there.
  • My favorite winter color palettes are:
  • Dark neutrals with GREEN or BURGUNDY.
  • Light neutrals with NAVY and/or CRANBERRY.
  • Mustard and rust with browns
  • Jewel Tones

Try to avoid the following:

  • white tees & blue jeans combo
  • visible wording or branding
  • patterns that are very bold or harsh
  • clothing that is too tight, or too loose
  • too many people wearing white as it will over-expose
  • black or very dark colors as it under-exposes
  • too much red (as it brings out the red in your skin tone)
  • lumo colors

The bottom line is, I want my clients to feel comfortable and as much like themselves as possible.

These are my suggestions only – I trust my clients to choose outfits that will bring out their personality and flair.
